Instrument Parts

Jaws
- Working end – makes contact with tissue
- Determines function & is used to identify instrument (name)
- Serrations, teeth, smooth


Box Lock (screw in scissors)
- Hinge of the instrument
- Allows instrument to work freely

Shank
- Gives instrument its closing force.
- Longer the shank the greater the closing force of the jaws.
- Longer shanks required for deeper body cavities.

Ratchet
- Locks instrument in the closing position / released by sideways motion with fingers.

Finger Rings
- Control the instrument.
- Surgeon places thumb in one ring and ring finger in other ring with index finger resting on shaft for full control.
