This presentation discusses the ongoing problematic of biofilms in flexible endoscopes. We will review the pathophysiology of biofilm formation, the different types of biofilms, the stages of biofilm development, the role of extracellular polymeric substances in antimicrobial tolerance. We will explore circumstances and clinical practices which contribute to device-associated contaminations. Recent endoscope contamination studies will be discussed as well as current and emerging strategies for biofilm prevention and management in healthcare settings.
