Instrument Parts

 

Jaws

  • Working end – makes contact with tissue
  • Determines function & is used to identify instrument (name)
  • Serrations, teeth, smooth

 

Box Lock (screw in scissors)

  • Hinge of the instrument
  • Allows instrument to work freely

 

Shank

  • Gives instrument its closing force.
  • Longer the shank the greater the closing force of the jaws.
  • Longer shanks required for deeper body cavities.

Ratchet

  • Locks instrument in the closing position / released by sideways motion with  fingers.

 

Finger Rings

  • Control the instrument.
  • Surgeon places thumb in one ring and ring finger in other ring with index finger resting on shaft for full control.
