Annexes 2b – Are Flexible Scopes Patient Ready

The presentation focuses on the critical role of borescope inspection in evaluating the internal condition of flexible endoscope lumens and its impact on true patient readiness. Flexible endoscopes contain complex internal channels that are not visible during standard visual inspection, yet these inner lumens are the most challenging areas to clean, disinfect, and dry. Traditional reprocessing methods assume effectiveness, but they do not verify the actual condition inside the channels.

Frank Daniels, MSHA, MPH, CHTM, CRCST, CER, CIS, CHL, AGTS, CSPDT, CFER, CSPM
Frank Daniels is the Associate Vice President of Sterilization and High-Level Disinfection at Virginia Commonwealth University Health. His responsibilities include overseeing all VCU Health HLD and SPD locations that include Main campus SPD, Children’s Hospital SPD, Surgery center SPD, two rural hospitals SPD, offsite reprocessing SPD for clinics and five strategically placed high-level disinfection rooms. Since Frank has centralized Sterile Processing and high-level disinfection, he has earned numerous accolades, including “”Best Practice”” and “”Perfect Practice.”” He is an active member of AAMI and a voting member of several AAMI workgroups. Frank has spoken at conferences both nationally and internationally.”
